The Duck & Waffle in London

Have you ever wanted to have a bite to eat with a beautiful view? Well then I suggest you head to the Duck & Waffle in London. It’s on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower and is within easy walking distance of Liverpool Street Station. The building itself stands at 230 metres and is one of Londons tallest buildings making the view breathtaking.

The View

It doesn’t really matter if it’s a sunny or a gloomy day, London is beautiful in all weathers and the view from the Duck & Waffle will be gorgeous regardless.

You need to book here well in advance and if there are just two of you then getting a window seat is ‘easy’ as most tables for two are by the windows. If there are more of you then you most likely will be sitting in the middle of the restaurant slightly away from the windows but as it’s floor to ceiling windows all round you you’ll still be able to admire the view.

Among other things you can see the Gherkin and Tower Bridge from here.

Confession time…

I’ve dragged my husband and my friends here on separate occasions over the past few years. I couldn’t keep this experience all to myself now could I? That’s what a good friend and wife I am hahahahah

I also totally over ordered the first time I came here. On purpose! I wanted to try their avocado toast, the Greek Yoghurt and honey and of course their namesake dish – duck and waffle. Because I couldn’t pick just one I ordered them all hahahaha I got some funny looks from the waiter as he wondered if I could eat it all. I laughed in his face as I knew I could. No I didn’t really laugh in his face hahahaha but my look said it all

The Bar

What you see first is the bar area. Full of bottles and the uniforms the bar staff wear are pretty cool. The interior is amazing and you spend a good 5-10 minutes here taking photographs, I kid you not hahahaha

I bet this is a pretty amazing place to have some after work drinks of an evening watching the sunset. Or of a morning after a night out watching the sunrise because guess what – this place is open 24 hours a day!!! Yep you read that right, it never closes.

The Restaurant

I’m not going to lie, the restaurant itself could be prettier. It’s almost as if they made the bar area look amazing and then thought nah, lets not bother with the restaurant. Having said that I suppose the focus really ought to be on the view right?

The Drinks

Of course I ordered the standard brunch mimosa and coffee on one of my visits and on another I ordered the prettiest drink. I wasn’t impressed with their version of pretty if I’m honest… it tasted good though hahahhaha Pretty is subjective – to me it’s pink with lots of lovely things sticking out of it hahahah they got the pink part right.

They have plenty of choice of drinks don’t get me wrong but as I’m not a heavy drinker (I know it doesn’t seem like it on this blog hahahaha) I don’t always understand the cocktails or drinks menu. This is why I ask for recommendations.

The Food

It’s kind of evident that I like it here as I’ve been back again and again. I must point out that the better food I’ve had here is the namesake Duck & Waffle. Everything else has been a bit meh. My husband had a fry up, they call it house breakfast and costs a whopping £16, and as you can see from the pictures above it’s very meh and so was the avocado on toast well technically it was Colombian Eggs that has avocado on toast with some trimmings. The duck and waffle though is gorgeous and so is the maple syrup with mustard seeds, this will set you back £18. The crispy polenta was also very yummy but very expensive, £3 each!

This isn’t the only Duck & Waffle in town. There is a Duck & Waffle Local which is in Picadilly. I haven’t been to that branch but I’d like to go as their insta looks yummy! Check it out here I’ve been past it on my way to Aquavit a few times and keep meaning to pop in as they also do take away which is great I think! You don’t always have the time to dine in and when the sun is out you just want to make the most of it and grab food to go.

The Verdict

  • Needless to say the view here is gorgeous
  • I highly recommend the signature dish
  • come here with a group of friends and also as just a pair, that way you get the best out of both worlds, view wise I mean.
  • It’s not the cheapest
  • The service was a little slow but they were quite busy
  • You are not allowed any bottles of water up in the tower, they search you at security on the way in on the bottom floor before they allow you on the elevator.
  • Keep in mind the menu changes depending on what part of the 24 hr part of the day you visit
  • Booking is a must, especially if only for 2 as there are not that many tables right by the windows. Looking at the booking form today as I type this on July 21, the next available Saturday brunch table for 2 is on September 7th! But a table of 5 could be booked for August 3rd.
